Opening Day Must Have!

A while back, a good friend of mine told me that I needed to get a Thermacell before opening day, as it really does work to get those annoying mosquitoes and flies away.  Well, I talked to him about it some more and he said it really does work and highly recommended it.   Well, I did a little more digging and found that he is not alone, lots and lots of people recommend these for not only hunting but any outdoor activity that could put you in danger of being bit by those annoying bugs.

I went out and picked one of these up this week and it will be finding its way into my pack for opening day.   I, myself will review it in the coming weeks after using it.

That being said, I decided since opening day is 8 days earlier this year, that means we have that much longer to wait for the first frost and thus that many more hunting trips that will be accompanied by those very annoying flying bugs that the Thermacell is this year's opening day must have!

Below is what I picked up for opening day to try it out!
This one is the appliance and the holster together, I picked them up separately but it is a better deal to get them together.
ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent - Realtree APG

I also picked up the Thermacell Mosquito Repellent Replacement Mats And Butane Cartridges.  These are made in earth scent pictured and if you do not want a cover scent they also have scent free which is what it normally comes with.

Do you have a Thermacell? How do you like it?

One of my best purchases before last year's deer season. They do actually work. I was getting drilled by mosquitos one night, so I pulled this thing out of my pack, tucked it into my safety strap on the tree and turned it on. 30 seconds later...no more mosquitos. Worked like a dream. I would say the ONLY negative it to light the butane, you need to depress the front button a couple times which makes a "clicking" noise, so if you're really concerned about making noise out there, that could be a negative. Personally, I don't think it really matters, but that's just me. I'd recommend these to anyone.

I should have listened to this post. Every minute I had a dang mosquito buzzing in my ear. I kept having to move my hands to get them away. As I was doing that I noticed a doe on my left and since I was hunting from the ground she noticed me right away. I had to freeze and I was completely unprepared since I had put my bow down for that moment. Well I slowly picked it up and it spooked her. She ran about 15 yards but stopped and looked at me again. I jumped up and let the arrow fly. I thought I hit her but it was such an adrenaline filled moment that I wasn't 100% sure. I waited for a while then went to find the arrow. It was lodged into a little tree and there was no blood on it. Ahhh. So I went back to the blind sat for another 45 minutes hoping something else would come. Finally I gave up and called my hunting buddy who was in the woods in another stand that it was time to go in. But I decided to take a look at where I saw the doe take off and too my amazement found a blood trail. It was bubbly blood so I figured it was from the lung. Tracked the blood trail for a while. After about 1/4 mile we found her. I dressed her and then dragged her up this huge hill, threw some ice in her and took her to the butcher. It goes to show you that you should never give up and I am so glad I gave it one more look. But I will be buying the mosquito repellent and heading back out today. Hope everyone else had a successful opening day!

Henry, Great to hear from you! Also glad to hear you were able to harvest a doe on opening day! Sounds like a thrilling experience even know I am sure it only lasted about 10 seconds. It's great to be back in the woods! I also commend you for going back and looking again for blood, as many people would of assumed they missed and not given another thought, always good to check. The Thermacell is working great, used it yesterday evening and this morning :-) Highly suggest getting one! Good luck this evening and we look forward to hearing how you did!
