Opening Day of Archery Season 2019

Opening day has come and gone already and I am just getting around to writing a post. I wasn't able to make it out hunting this opening day, but it was surely on my mind. Sometimes work and your personal life don't allow you to always do the things you want when you want. I hope my hunting season starts in the coming days.

I have heard some good stories already about close encounters and heard some other stories about slow starts to the year. I haven't heard anything about anyone actually harvesting a deer yet though.

I am keeping up with my trail cameras and got all my gear ready and I really hope this coming week will be the start of my hunting season.

Does anyone have any good stories or harvests to share with us?

I’m new to the Maryland/DC area and am trying to figure out licensing stuff for this hunting season - from what I can tell, I just need a license and an archery stamp and I’m good to go hunt on any public land (plus making a reservation on any spots that require reservations). Do you have any other advice for me? Thanks in advance.

Troy, You are mostly correct. You will need your standard hunting license, and a bow stamp to archery hunt. You will also need a muzzleloader stamp to hunt during muzzleloader season even if you are bow hunting during that season. Some public lands require permits of sorts that you have to carry with you while hunting those locations such as Loch Raven Reservoir. Other public lands require you to purchase a special permit to hunt that area, and beyond that there is also a Manager Hunt Permit which a number of public lands require you to have obtained that permit before you can hunt those areas. The best thing to do before you hunt anywhere on public land to visit the Maryland DNR website and look up the regulations for that area and if any permits are required. Beyond that most all public lands in Maryland offer good opportunities to see and harvest a deer. The best advice we can offer is plan ahead, scout, and always have a backup plan as you never know when you get to an area if there will already be too many people there. Sometimes it's other hunters other times, hikers or dog walkers etc. and you need to be able to have a backup plan if nothing else different locations within walking distance. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions. Good Luck!
